YouTube has just launched its long-awaited music subscription service.
Change of key
YouTube Music Key gives users access to Google Play Music's 30 million strong library, in addition to ad-free music videos and offline viewing.
“Starting today, you’ll see a new home just for music on your YouTube app for Android, iOS and on YouTube.com that shows your favorite music videos, recommended music playlists based on what you’re into and playlists of trending music across YouTube,” the company explained in a blog post.
Tune in
The service also dovetails with a new music feature on YouTube that recommends playlists based on trends and users' interests.
In addition, YouTube Music Key will also notify users when artists they follow post new content.
Musically inclined
With over 1 billion monthly active users, YouTube has a vast user base to tap for music money. The difference between Music Key other streaming services such as Spotify, is that the emphasis is on music videos.
If users want to view as well as hear the music, it might prove a very lucrative earner for Google-owned YouTube.
YouTube Music Key is currently in beta and available on Android, iOS and desktop for US$9.99 per month.
