The sun rises in the east, death, taxes, and tweets at 140 characters. There are some immutable rules of the universe.
Or so we thought. Twitter is reportedly toying with the idea of extending the length of tweets from 140 to a mammoth 10,000 characters.
Size matters?
According to ReCode, Twitter has created the Beyond 140 project to examine what expanded tweets might look like.
At this stage it's speculated that longer tweets will still adhere to the 140 character limit in the feed, but can be clicked to expand.
For the record, 10,000 characters is the limit Twitter currently imposes for Direct Messages.
Keeping up with the Joneses
The expanded tweets could address two of Twitter's ongoing problems: engaging new users and keeping existing tweeters on the platform longer, instead of clicking on links to third-party sites.
However Twitter's 140 character limit is arguably its strongest point of difference, allowing users to quickly skim large amounts of content.
It's thought the new super-sized tweets could be released by March, stay tuned to see how users #respond.
