Instagram has quietly launched a native payment feature for in app purchases. Nice one.
Debit or Credit
Instagram Payments allows users to register a debit or credit card to their profile along with a corresponding security pin and purchase without ever leaving Instagram.
Instagram is already rolling out a precursory feature allowing for ticket and reservation bookings for selected partners through the app.
Instagram Payments adheres to Facebook’s Payments rules as outlined in the terms and services.
Parent company efforts
Facebook had dabbled with native commerce back in 2013, with peer-to-peer payments possible within Messenger. Suffice to say, Instagram is poised to be a much more suitable platform for online shopping.
Companies like BigCommerce and Shopify, along with Kate Spade and Warby Parker, have partnered with the new platform to various experiences with encouraging success.
Even Snapchat has begun playing with native payment strategies, with all the major social platforms mobilising commerce services, a new paradigm may be just upstream.
