Last year Facebook turned its gaze and considerable resources to outpacing rivals Snapchat and LinkedIn, even if it meant blatantly poaching these platforms’ most popular features.
Now it appears Facebook has Yelp and other location-based apps in its crosshairs.
Check-in, drop out
Facebook’s Events app has been rebranded as Local, and currently has over 70 million business pages on its database, plus user reviews and check-ins.
Much like Yelp and Foursquare before it, Local lets users post reviews, see where nearby friends are at, and access maps.
Third time’s a charm
Facebook’s former forays into events and local listings haven’t exactly set the world on fire.
However with over 2.1 billion users and a massive trove of data about these people and their habits, Facebook may now have the demographic muscle and treasure chest to succeed.
