Facebook is finally considering a Dislike button. Just don't call it that.
The new feature is all about empathy, according to Mark Zuckerberg.
Dissing the Likes
Zuckerberg revealed the news last week in a public Q&A, and was at pains to explain that the button was for showing sympathy for tragic news and so on, not dissing your best friend's relationship status.
“People aren’t looking for an ability to downvote other people’s posts. What they really want is to be able to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment, right?
"And if you are sharing something that is sad, whether it’s something in current events like the refugee crisis that touches you or if a family member passed away, then it might not feel comfortable to Like that pos,” he explained.
Button up
For many years the Dislike button has been one of the most requested features from the Facebook faithful.
The feature makes sense when a user wants to covey support for unfortunate news, and a Like seems inappropriate.
However the wording of Dislike could also throw up its own quandaries. Some are saying a 'Sorry' button would be more fitting.
What would you like to see the Dislike button called? Let us know in the comments.
