The Android Developers Blog has outlined a new standardised method for phone number collection and verification: it is significantly increasing success rates for phone number sign-ups.
Phone numbers
Whether for list-building or actual service provision, getting correct phone numbers can be a challenge. Information collection and verification can come off as inconvenient or intrusive.
Many users shy away from apps that seem to ask for too many permissions to access phone data.
There are tools that can make this better. Google Play Services has just unveiled a couple, along with a current best-practice guide so app developers can use it effectively.
Better user experience = more sign-ups
A couple of new offerings for developers can get and verify users phone numbers in app, and with an improved user experience. Importantly, these procedures will not require any extra device permissions.
Google reports that apps using these new methods have seen a 12% increase of success rates in phone number sign-up flows.
