Re-enforcing its place as the epicentre of all the breaking news that’s fit to click, Twitter is now experimenting with trending tweets in the timeline.
#Trendy
Users first started spotting highlighted tweets from accounts they weren’t following at the recent Australian Open.
These tweets look similar to the “While You Were Away” feature on Twitter – clicking on them led to expanded content around the tweet.
For example, during the Australian Open users were able to access real-time sporting results, player bios, and related news articles.
Tweaks required
At the time of writing trending tweets were receiving negative feedback from some users, as they didn’t always contain relevant content.
While Twitter is continually trialng new bells and whistles, expect this one to be more targeted before a wider roll out.
In the meantime it might not hurt Twitter in keeping ahead of the breaking news space – something Facebook is keen to muscle in on.
