Gmail just became more secure

You may not have known it, but Safer Internet Day has just been celebrated (or at least observed) around the globe.

In a nod to the humble but important day, Google has released two updates to help make your emailing more secure.

Lock it up

Now when sending an email from Gmail, you’ll see a pop-up notification if your recipient doesn’t support TLS encryption, which means your content is potentially not secure.

Conversely, you’ll also be alerted if you want to receive emails from a non-encrypted sender.

The pop up is displayed as a red padlock icon.

A question of security

The second update sees a question mark icon over the profile picture of senders whose identity can’t be verified.

Both updates are aimed at cutting down on phishing scams and scams, which costs Google much time and money to combat.

Google is offering any user who beats its Security Checkup tool 2GB in free storage.
