From live streaming to 360 and VR content, Facebook has embraced practically every form of online video.
Now Facebook is reportedly dipping its toe into contentious waters: autoplay video with sound.
Sounding off
Select users in Australia will now be shown Facebook videos that autoplay with sound – this includes ads and Facebook Live content.
Users will receive a pop-up message explaining how to use the controls, and how to turn off the sound if required.
Thankfully, you're able to select an "always off" preference under Settings.
Silence is golden
While this is just a trial, there doesn't seem to be a huge outcry from users for autoplay with audio.
Over 85% of videos on Facebook now play without sound, and Facebook's own research found that 80% of people respond negatively to mobile video ads with autoplay audio.
Stay tuned to see if Aussie Facebookers give the new feature a smiley face or thumbs down.
