Apple is still the superpower of virtual assistance, but it’s giving up ground to the likes of Microsoft and Amazon. Consumer habits are already evolving and Google, it seems, is still watching and learning.
Big picture
Multi-screen media measurement firm Verto Analytics has released a report that analyses and ranks the most popular AI-powered apps used in the US.
Overall, it seems that early growth in the virtual assistant sector has stagnated. The use of AI assistants on mobile devices is dropping, except in the case of navigation and maps.
This may be because virtual assistants are moving into home-based devices.
Insights on supremacy
Siri’s user base shrunk by 15% over the year to May 2017. Still, it clearly leads the pack with 41.4 million monthly users.
At the same time Alexa (by Amazon) has made significant gains, with a 325% increase in fans, taking it to 2.8 million user per month.
Microsoft's Cortana has finally stepped up too, but is yet to take a real tilt at the title. It’s currently used by about 700,000 Americans per month.
Verto’s full report, titled ‘Rise of the Machines: How AI-Driven Personal Assistant Apps Are Shaping Digital Consumer Habits’, is available for download here.
Will Siri double-down on the dominance with Apple’s HomePod?
